Change distribution
Change the Way We Work lists actions that distribution companies can take to reduce their carbon emissions.
The shift from analogue to digital is dramatically reducing the environmental impact of film distribution (though not of exhibition – many digital projectors use twice the energy of analogue projectors). However, analogue film prints are likely to be with us for a long time to come and carbon emissions will present significant, even if different problems in an all-digital world.
The UK Film Council is working with the Film Distributors' Association to help distributors:
- Reduce carbon emissions when transporting analogue film prints
- Reduce carbon emissions caused by the archival storage of old film prints
- Optimise the re-use of materials, including disks, reels and cans
- Reduce the environmental impact of disposal of chemical and physical waste associated with film prints
- Reduce waste and increase re-cycling of materials used in marketing promotions, including advertising displays in cinema foyers.
"New technologies mean the film industry is in a strong position to enhance its energy efficiency, gain a competitive edge and provide a lead that others can follow."
Mark Batley, Chief Executive of the Film Distributors' Association
